Top Net Payout Yield Companies For 2014

NEW YORK (The Deal) After his long-fought battle with Carl Icahn, one might think Michael Dell would rest on his laurels and keep Dell (DELL) the private, nimble startup he is promising the world. However, buried in the financing details for the nearly $25 billion leveraged buyout, backed by Silver Lake, is a hint that options are being kept open for a return trip to the public markets.

The roadshow for Dell's $3.25 billion bond offering backing its buyout is kicking off this week. The offering includes $2 billion of first-lien seven-year senior notes and $1.25 billion of second-lien eight-year senior notes.

Both tranches have three years of call protection, but the second-lien notes have a clawback that would allow 50% of the notes to be called at par plus half the coupon in case of an initial public offering.

You'll notice that these numbers don't add up to $1.4988. That's because the 2012 distribution also contained a hefty chunk of return of capital (70.489 cents). ROC isn't taxable immediately; rather, it is subtracted from the adjusted cost base (ACB) of the units, which gives rise to a larger capital gain, or smaller capital loss, when the units are ultimately sold. Many REITs and mutual funds also distribute ROC. ROC can be a bit of a headache for investors. If you hold BIP in a non-registered account, you (or your accountant), will need to track those ROC payments in order to keep your ACB up to date. Knowing the ACB is necessary to calculate your capital gain, or loss, when it comes time to sell.

Hovnanian Enterprises’ (HOV) earnings report was ho-hum–but more than enough to lift the stock and other homebuilders.

    Reuters

    The Wall Street Journal reports:

For the period ended July 31, Hovnanian reported a profit of $8.5 million, or six cents a share, down from $34.7 million, or 25 cents a share, a year earlier. The year-earlier period included a $36.5 million income tax benefit and $6.2 million in debt-extinguishment gains.

Revenue jumped 24% to $478.4 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters recently expected per-share earnings of seven cents and revenue of $505 million.

Adjusted home-building gross margin rose to 20.3% from 18.2%.

The initial reaction to those numbers was ho-hum as well, as Hovnanian’s shares opened down 0.2%. Still, it didn’t take long for investors to realize there were more to them a simple earnings miss. Hovnanian predicted a profitable year for the first time since 2006, for instance, and it also helped that CEO Ara Hovnanian was feeling pretty good during the company’s conference call. Comments like these (courtesy of FactSet):

…we’re confident that the any hesitancy our consumers have seen or felt or acted with the higher rates will be a temporary bump in the road to housing recovery.

Our confidence is bolstered by analysis of long-term home ownership affordability…Even though there’s some sticker shock for consumers with the recent increase in mortgage rates and the increase in home prices, we’re still very comfortable at the affordability levels compared to historic standards.

Even if the 30-year mortgage rates were to increase 100 basis points to 5.4%, and if home prices on top of that went up another 6% from the June 13 levels…affordability would still be better than at any point in the period [from] 1975 through 2007, notwithstanding the current two-month record high affordability levels.

In major earnings news, Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: HOV) is up 2% today as it reports its third-quarter earnings fell to $0.06 per share from $0.25 the year earlier. Its earnings missed the Street consensus of $0.07 by $0.01 per share.

Craig Warga/Bloomberg via Getty Images You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From earnings reports to a new "Hobbit" film, let's take a look at the business news that will break in the week ahead. Monday -- Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow: Ski resorts are open for the season, and we'll get a great early read on how the business is holding up when Vail Resorts (MTN) reports fresh financials after Monday's market close. True to its name, Vail Resorts operates a ski property in Vail as well as nearby slopes in Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado. It also owns resorts in six different snowy states. Don't expect a quarterly profit out of Vail Resorts. The months of August, September, and October are naturally forgettable for ski resorts. Vail expects to generate four times as much revenue during the next three months as it did during the period that ended in October. However, Vail Resorts should be able to offer a glimpse about how the new ski season is starting to shape up. It has enough advance booking information to know what folks are willing to pay this year for a trek out to the slopes. Tuesday -- For Whom the Bell Tolls: It's once again great time to be a real estate developer. Home prices are moving higher, and those increases are moving at a headier clip than the costs to build new digs. We'll get a good snapshot of the housing industry when Toll Brothers (TOL) reports on Tuesday. The builder of upscale properties is typically blunt about its assessment, and naturally the news has been good in recent quarters as home buyers aren't walking away from their contracts, and asking prices keep inching up. Hovnanian (HOV) -- another developer that offers more accessibly priced properties -- reports two days later. Analysts see revenue surging 56 percent at Toll and 19 percent at Hovnanian. It's good to be a builder right now, but that won't remain that way i

Must-See Charts: 5 Large-Caps to Trade for Gains

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- After opening lower at the open on Wednesday, S&P 500 pulled out a surprise gain in yesterday's session, adding on to the broad-based rally that kicked off at the start of May. There's no question that buyers are still very much in control here, even if the S&P is getting close to the top of its long-term price channel.

>>Buy These 5 Rocket Stocks to Beat the Market

But that hasn't stopped investors from getting anxious about performance this summer. In fact, a quick news search for the term "summer doldrums" brings up more than 6,500 results just from the last few weeks. Perception isn't reality for nail-biting investors right now. In fact, 2014 has brought the second-best May-to-June rally in the last decade with 3.79% gains. The best was 2009 with 4.87%.

How's that for summer doldrums?

To take advantage of the disconnect between perception and performance this week, we're turning to the charts to find five big-name stocks that look ready for a summer breakout.

If you're new to technical analysis, here's the executive summary.

>>5 Stocks With Big Insider Buying

Technicals are a study of the market itself. Since the market is ultimately the only mechanism that determines a stock's price, technical analysis is a valuable tool even in the roughest of trading conditions. Technical charts are used every day by proprietary trading floors, Wall Street's biggest financial firms, and individual investors to get an edge on the market. And research shows that skilled technical traders can bank gains as much as 90% of the time.

Every week, I take an in-depth look at big names that are telling important technical stories. Here's this week's look at five high-volume stocks to trade this week.

BlackRock

Up first is asset management giant BlackRock (BLK), a name that's been meandering sideways for most of 2014. While the broad market has pushed its way more than 6% higher year-to-date, BLK has barely budged 0.2%. But that sideways consolidation is setting up the basis for a breakout this summer. Here's how to trade it.

BlackRock is forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish price setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares (at $320 in this case) and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as BLK bounces in between those two technically important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer to a breakout above that $320 price ceiling. When that happens, we have our buy signal in this stock.

Momentum, measured by 14-day RSI, adds some extra confidence to this setup. In spite of the sideways movement this year, RSI is still making higher lows in the intermediate term. That uptrend in our momentum gauge favors an upside breakout over a move lower in the coming weeks.

Lockheed Martin

We're seeing the exact same setup right now in defense contractor Lockheed Martin (LMT). Lockheed has posted some more impressive performance in 2014, rallying almost 10% since the calendar flipped to January -- but shares look ready for another leg higher thanks to the ascending triangle trade that's been forming since March. The breakout level to watch in LMT is $168; if that level gets taken out, LMT becomes a high-probability buy.

Why all of that significance at $168? It all comes down to buyers and sellers. Price patterns are a good quick way to identify what's going on in the price action, but they're not the actual reason a stock is tradable. Instead, the "why" comes down to basic supply and demand for Lockheed's stock.

The $168 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a spot where sellers have previously been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above $168 so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

After the breakout happens, I'd recommend putting a protective stop just below the 50-day moving average. That level has been a solid proxy for support on the way up.

Illumina

$22 billion genetic testing stock Illumina (ILMN) is enjoying some blockbuster performance this year: in those last six months, ILMN has climbed more than 54.5% higher. In March, shares hit a resistance level at $180 and reversed lower, dropping down to $130 as owners took gains on shares of Illumina. But that drop doesn't mean that the rally is over. A "rounding bottom" setup in the last few months points to a second leg to ILMN's rally.

ILMN's rounding bottom is a price setup that indicates a gradual transition in control from sellers to buyers. The pattern's name is a pretty good description of how it looks on a charr. Even though Illumina's rounding bottom came in at the top of its recent price range (not the bottom), the trading implications are just the same. The buy signal triggers on a move through our $180 price ceiling.

From a risk-management standpoint, the line in the sand in ILMN is down at the bottom of the setup at $130. If shares violate that floor, then the upside setup gets invalidated. For that reason, $130 a perfect place to keep a protective stop. After all, if shares are able to fall below that level, you don't want to own Illumina anymore.

Kimberly-Clark

You don't need to be an expert technical trader to figure out what's going on in shares of paper maker Kimberly-Clark (KMB). A quick look at the chart should be enough to tell you everything you need to know about shares of KMB: As we head into July, it's a "buy the dips stock."

KMB has been in a well-defined uptrending channel since the start of the year, bouncing its way higher in between a pair of parallel trend lines that identify the high-probability range for KMB's stock to stay within. When it comes to trend channels, up is good and down is bad -- it's really just as simple as that. So as this stock tests trend line support for the seventh time since this pattern came into play, it makes sense to buy the next bounce off of support, a signal we could see as soon as today.

If you decide to jump in here, it makes sense to keep a protective stop on the other side of that lower trend line. If it gets taken out, the pattern is broken and you don't want to own KMB anymore.

Hertz Global Holdings

Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ) is another uptrending channel that's in play this week. Like KMB, Hertz has been bouncing its way higher in an uptrending channel since the beginning of the year. Now the next high-probability buying opportunity comes on a bounce off of trend line support.

Waiting for a bounce is important for two key reasons: it's the spot where shares have the furthest to move up before they hit resistance, and it's the spot where the risk is the least (because shares have the least room to move lower before you know you're wrong). Remember, all trend lines do eventually break, but by actually waiting for the bounce to happen first, you're ensuring HTZ can actually still catch a bid along that line before you put your money on shares.

Relative strength is the confirming indicator to watch in HTZ right now. The relative strength line has been making higher lows since the uptrend in Hertz started, an indication that this stock isn't just trending higher -- it's also outperforming the S&P 500 over the same stretch. Statistically speaking, relative strength outperformers are likely to keep beating the broad market on a 3-to-10-month time horizon. That bodes well for HTZ shareholders this summer.

I've suggested that investors buy Ambarella (NASDAQ: AMBA  ) instead of GoPro. It's the lone provider ofvideo compression and image processing semiconductors for GoPro's cameras, but Ambarella isn't hogtied to GoPro's popularity. Ambarella's presence in Dropcam surveillance cameras and a recent deal for Google Helpouts provide diversification in high-def cameras.

One under-$10 technology player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is On Track Innovations (OTIV), which designs, develops and markets contactless microprocessor-based smart card solutions to customers in Africa, Europe, the Far East, the Americas and Israel. This stock has been red hot over the last three months, with shares up a whopping 134%.

If you take a look at the chart for On Track Innovations, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating over the last month and change, with shares moving between $2.70 on the downside and $3.74 on the upside. Shares of OTIV have now started to spike higher off some near-term support at $3 a share and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OTIV if it manages to break out above its 52-week high at $3.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 626,538 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OTIV will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4.50 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy OTIV off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits just below some key near-term support levels at $3.20 or at $3 a share. One can also buy OTIV off strength once it starts to clear its 52-week high at $3.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Best Integrated Utility Stocks To Own Right Now: Paragon Shipping Inc.(PRGN)

Paragon Shipping Inc. provides shipping transportation services worldwide. The company engages in the ocean transportation of various drybulk cargoes and containers. Its fleet consists of 11 drybulk vessels with a total carrying capacity of 747,994 dwt. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Voula, Greece.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 name shipping player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Paragon Shipping (PRGN), which is engaged in transporting drybulk cargoes, including such commodities as iron ore, coal, grain and other materials along shipping routes worldwide. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 114%.

If you take a look at the chart for Paragon Shipping, you'll notice that this stock just recently took out its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share with strong upside volume. Shares of PRGN are showing relative strength today, despite the overall market weakness, which shows this stock is in strong demand at current levels. This move is now starting to push shares of PRGN within range of triggering a big breakout trade

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PRGN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.90 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 25,811 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PRGN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share. If that level gets taken out with volume, then PRGN could easily tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $7 to $8.35 a share.

Traders can look to buy PRGN off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share, or below its 200-day moving average at $3.74 a share. One can also buy PRGN off strength once it clears $4.90 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point. I would add to either position once PRGN takes out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share with strong upside volume flows.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Stepan (NYSE: SCL  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Stepan doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 4.8%, and inventory increased 30.6%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue dropped 1.9%, and inventory grew 30.6%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue grew 6.9%, and inventory grew 9.5%.

Right now I know that silver miners like Pan American Silver (PAAS) and Coeur Mining (CDE) are very cheap on an asset basis. I know that oil and gas producers like Swift Energy (SFY) and WPX Energy (WPX) are priced as if no one will ever use the stuff again. I know that small banks like Cape Bancorp (CBNJ) and Essa Bancorp (ESSA) are crazy-cheap — and if the world does not end, those stocks will be a lot higher in a few years.

'Duck Dynasty' Offers Fortune-Hunting Lessons for Us All

5 Best Stocks To Watch Right Now

TV Duck Dynasty Zach Dilgard/A&E/AP Maybe you think the A&E reality show "Duck Dynasty" is fake or low-brow, or you disagree with the clan's often-controversial beliefs. But you can't argue the admitted redneck Robertsons of West Monroe, Louisiana, haven't made Scrooge McDuck bucks from "faith, family and facial hair." Already a million-dollar business before the show started six seasons and four years ago, the Robertson family enterprise has grown via deals with Walmart (WMT) totaling $400 million in merchandise, books, themed cruises, music CDs and speaking gigs. The family fortune was an estimated $83 million as of last August, and A&E salaries are reportedly $200,000 per episode. So what can you about money by watching the camo-clad camaraderie of Uncle Si, Phil and sons Willie, Jase and Jep? Live Your Dream From a duck call that flinty eyed patriarch Phil Robertson patented in the early 1970s emerged a multimillion dollar empire. Phil turned down a career with the Washington Redskins and also left a secure teaching job (he has a master's degree in education) to build a better duck call. The first year the business barely netted $8,000. As years went by, he incorporated the family into the business, keeping overhead low by selling products from home, going on sales trips himself and putting money back in the business Lesson: Find a niche you are passionate about, keep overhead low and go build that better mousetrap. Don't Be Afraid to Try New Things Phil and Miss Kay are tech Luddites, but they were discovered through the company's homemade hunting videos on YouTube, which son Jep still shoots and directs. Last year, CEO Willie Robertson bought a winery and of course, hilarity ensued on the grape-stomping episode, but it resulted in undrinkable vino. Since then, they partnered up with a winemaker, and the stuff is selling at select Walmarts for $10 a pop. Lesson: New endeavors may not work out immediately but keep trying. Rich is Better, but You Don't Need a Lot Miss Kay may tell high school sweetheart and husband Phil, "I've been poor with you, and I've been rich with you. Rich is better." The couple still lives in the modest house they bought decades ago that's worth $100,000. Other family members have bought themselves redneck toys: ATVs, a custom RV and a Ninja sword (of which Si quipped it was so sharp it could take "the hair off a dolphin's chest"). But for the most part they're just as happy to go hunting on the land that Phil bought years ago, his one big splurge. Lesson: You don't need a lot of money to be, "happy, happy, happy," as Phil's often says. Play to Your Strengths Phil picked Willie (who doubled his net worth of $10 million to $20 million this year) as CEO after he show his entrepreneurship at age 10 racking up sales with his own candy concession. Uncle Si may nap more than Willie likes, but he is the man when it comes to making the reeds that create the distinctive duck sounds. Jase takes the expression "play to your strength" maybe too literally and usually leads the work-shirking hijinks. Yet, he sees the calls get made eventually. Other family members also have important roles and until very recently, family made up 80 per cent of their workforce. Lesson: In a family business, or any business, everyone needs to know they have a valued role that suits their talents. Give Back Yes, they are a self-professed family of faith. The laconic Jase sums up their beliefs as "God, family, ducks, in that order." They speak for free at churches nationwide. Willie and wife Korie are big believers in adoption. "The best decision we ever made -– that made the biggest impact on our life --was the adoption of our son Will," Willie said when they were honored by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. The family, known in the West Monroe community as generous benefactors, recently created their own Duck Commander Worldwide Foundation.
