It wouldn’t be much of a shock. In an article earlier today, MarketWatch reporter Andria Cheng notes that industry rivals including Pier 1 Imports (PIR), the Container Store (TCS) and Williams-Sonoma (WSM) lowered their profit or sales outlooks. Cheng also notes that Bed Bach & Beyond had cut its outlook in June to $1.08 a share from $1.16. She continues:

Shares of Williams-Sonoma (WSM) have tumbled today after the home-products retailer offered a disappointing outlook even as it met second-quarter earnings forecasts.

Williams-Sonoma reported a profit of 53 cents a share, in line with estimates, on revenue of $1.04 billion, also meeting expectations. That alone would probably have been enough to send Williams-Sonoma’s shares lower since they were trading near a 52-week high right before the release. Throw in the sour guidance–Williams-Sonoma expected to earn $3.07 to $3.17 a share in 2014, below forecasts for $3.21–and you have the recipe for destruction.

Williams-Sonoma’s shares have dropped 11% to $66.75 at 10:20 a.m. Morgan Stanley’s Simeon Gutman and team explain why they downgraded Williams-Sonoma’s shares to Equal Weight despite the stock getting pounded today:

While Q2 EPS was solid and in-line, we were expecting a carry-over in top-line momentum from previous quarters and comparable brand growth in the high single digits. We did not get this (Q2 comparable brand growth +5.7%), due to competition and tougher compares and now no longer believe the business will generate this level of growth in the near-term. Valuation (19x 2015e earnings) is not as supportive of a business that we now see generating low teens growth over the next 12 months.

Williams-Sonoma’s PEG rate was elevated recently given positive earnings surprises. The PEG rate rose to ~1.6x vs. the one year average at 1.45x and the three year average of 1.3x. With earnings growth accelerating, this seemed appropriate and we believed these valuation levels would continue. But, with the rate of change moderating (albeit still healthy) the PEG may come back in. Even after tonight's stock move, there could be 2 turns of EPS multiple risk. The stock does not necessarily have much downside, but it could mark time as near-term earnings growth is digested.

Bed Bath & Beyond competes with companies such as Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM  ) and Pier 1 Imports  (NYSE: PIR  ) . Both of those businesses have a higher P/E ratio than Bed Bath & Beyond, though Williams-Sonoma's is on the rise, while Pier 1's is falling.

The Q1 2014 earnings report for Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc (NYSE: RH), a potential peer of other furniture or home décor retailers like Williams-Sonoma, Inc (NYSE: WSM), Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (NASDAQ: BBBY) and Pier 1 Imports Inc (NYSE: PIR), is scheduled for after the market closes on Wednesday. Aside from the Restoration Hardware Holdings earnings report, it should be said that Bed Bath & Beyond Inc reported Q4 2013 earnings on April 9th (shares dropped after profit forecast trails estimates) and will report Q1 2014 June 23rd; Pier 1 Imports Inc will report Q1 2015 earnings on Monday, June 16th; and Williams-Sonoma, Inc reported Q1 2014 earnings on May 21st (comparable brand revenues grow 10%, operating income grows 17% and EPS increased 20% to $0.48). All of these stocks are a potential play on a housing recovery plus Restoration Hardware Holdings gave a strong guidance the last time it reported earnings.

5 Best Gas Stocks To Invest In 2014

There has been a great deal of concern about the United States suffering from a "lost generation" as Japan has now for several. For investors in oil, this has certainly not been the case: A recent article in The Wall Street Journal noted that oil has risen 310% (Brent Crude) over the last decade. The future looks equally promising for investments in the sector such as ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU), Americas Petrogas (BOE.V), and Octagon 88 (OTCBB: OCTX).

The exchange traded fund for oil, United States Oil (NYSE: USO), is up more than 12% for the last quarter. Part of the rise of United States Oil in recent market action has been due to the "Syria Premium." But there are many aspects to oil that has it climbing in price as other commodities fall, as noted by The Wall Street Journal piece.

In December 2012, the Company acquired certain strategic light oil assets. In February 2014, the Company closed the disposition of certain oil and gas assets in southeast Saskatchewan. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Many American oil and gas investors are probably familiar with the major large and small cap players in the Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana, but few American investors are probably familiar withthe active players further to the north in theoil and gas rich Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Albertawith small cap stocks like Alexander Energy Ltd (CVE: ALX), Renegade Petroleum Ltd (CVE: RPL) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) along with large cap Suncor Energy Inc (NYSE: SU) being among thosepumping out their share of noteworthy news lately. I should point out thatCanada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the controversialoil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation actually stretches into) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also containing substantial production and reserves. Moreover and excluding the oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

5 Best Airline Stocks To Own For 2014

Wolfe Research’s Hunter Keay and Jared Shojaian note that analyst earnings forecasts for American Airlines’ (AAL) have risen much faster than its stock:

We looked at how 2015 consensus EPS estimates have changed YTD compared to YTD stock performance for the airlines we cover.

Simplistically stock prices should trend with changes in consensus EPS estimates, all else equal. P/E multiple contraction/expansion occurs when they don.

American Airlinesthe most out of sync to the upside.American Airlines’ 2015 consensus EPS estimates have increased 63% YTD whileAmerican Airlines’ stock is up just 56% YTD.American Airlines is the only U.S. airline stock we cover whose estimates have grown faster than the stock, implying YTD P/E multiple contraction. It also worth noting that 2015 consensus EPS estimates forAmerican Airlines still feel too light to us. If numbers keep going up, which we think they should, then it seems the stock should go up, too. The recent selloff seems like a great buying opportunity.

The Company competes with AirTran, Frontier, Spirit, Southwest, US Airways, Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, Delta, Xtra, United and American.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Lewis]

At 9.5 times forward earnings, Alaska Air is priced far cheaper than another grower,Allegiant Air Travel Group (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) , which trades at more than 14 times earnings. Allegiant Air does operate a large travel booking service, which may warrant higher valuations, but the core airline business does not have as attractive long-term metrics as Alaska Air's. Another favorite among investors and travelers, JetBlue, trades much closer to Alaska Air at 9.4 times forward earnings. I like both companies, but am more attracted to Alaska's growth prospects as it is still mainly a West Coast airline with plenty of room for expansion.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We believe a continuation of healthy earnings and cash flow should create greater opportunities to further shareholder-friendly agendas, as we expect a number of US carriers to either augment or introduce shareholder capital return programs (through dividends and/or share repurchases) within the next several quarters (namely [American Airlines, Alegiant Travel (ALGT), Alaska Air, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines)…we think the stocks will continue to perform well throughout the remainder of year.

  • [By Brian Stoffel]

First there was Spirit Air (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) , charging for everything from printing a boarding pass to getting a cup of water. Then there was Allegiant Airlines (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) , forcing customers to pay for carry-on bags, pillows, and blankets.

On Thursday, Morgan Stanley reported that it has downgraded security and storage management company Symantec Corporation (SYMC).

Morgan Stanley has cut its rating on SYMC to an “Equal Weight.” Analysts believe that the company lacks near term catalysts.

Nomura Securities analysts initiated coverage on Symantec Corporation (SYMC) early on Wednesday, giving the stock a “Neutral” rating because its upside is already priced into its current valuation.

The analysts see shares of SYMC reaching $29, which suggests a 14.6% upside to the stock’s Tuesday closing price of $25.30.

Nomura Securities analyst Frederick Grieb commented, “In the early innings of a classic turnaround story, but upside largely priced In. We initiate coverage of Symantec (SYMC) with a Neutral rating and a 12-month target price of $29. Symantec is a leading vender in the security and storage markets, but has struggled to grow market share post its 2005 acquisition of VERITAS. The company has faced competitive pressures in its core markets, with ‘freemium’ antivirus software pressuring the consumer business, while the storage business has been challenged by enterprise migration to Windows and Linux from Solaris and UNIX. Despite these headwinds, we are launching coverage of Symantec with a Neutral rating, as we believe management will be able to improve the business by increasing margins (perhaps to +33%) and longer-term organic growth through a combination of simplifying management structures and a better strategy to incentivize the sales force. However, given the stock 33% increase YTD, due in part to multiple expansion (P/E up 18% YTD), we believe much of the upside from this turnaround is already baked in. FY14E EPS starts at $1.2; FY15E EPS starts at $2.18.”

Symantec Corp shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Wednesday. The stock is up 34.43% year-to-date.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images Google (GOOG) won a major victory in its fight against claims it illegally scanned private email messages to and from Gmail accounts, defeating a bid to unify lawsuits in a single group case on behalf of hundreds of millions of Internet users. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday refused to let the case proceed as a class action, which would have allowed plaintiffs to pool resources and put greater pressure on Google to settle. If individuals pursue their claims against the owner of world's largest search engine, they'll need to use their own financial resources to litigate. Email users claimed Google intercepted, read and mined the content of email messages for targeted advertising and to build user profiles. Legal experts including Stanford Law School Professor Deborah Hensler said before Wednesday's ruling that while the plaintiffs faced difficulty joining forces, the case stood to potentially become the largest group lawsuit ever. The amount at stake could have reached into the trillions of dollars if, as the plaintiffs argued, each person was eligible for damages of $100 a day for violations of federal wiretap law. Koh's ruling has implications for email privacy cases assigned to her that were filed last year against Yahoo (YHOO) and LinkedIn (LNKD), which also have hundreds of millions of users. Similarly giant cases have been brought against Facebook (FB) and Hulu as Web users challenge how companies monetize their data for the online advertising market that generated more than $40 billion in the U.S. last year. Koh found that the proposed classes of people in the Google case aren't "sufficiently cohesive," according to Wednesday's ruling. Members' Consent The judge wrote in her order that the question of whether the proposed class members consented to the alleged interceptions has been "central to this case since it was filed." AP/Jim Mone Is Bitcoin a slam-dunk as the currency of the future? The Sacramento Kings seem to think so. The NBA team recently became the first pro sports franchise to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. The move was an instant hit -- the first day the company had the nifty Bitcoin button as an option in its shopping cart, its customers used it to make more than 800 transactions for total sales of around $130,000. Overstock.com was by no means the first online marketplace to accept the currency. Numerous web retailers have been doing so for some time. CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Hot US Stocks To Own For 2015: Guggenheim S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP)

Rydex S&P Equal Weight ETF (the Fund) seeks to replicate as closely as possible the performance of the S&P Equal Weight Index (the Index). The Index is the equal-weighted version of the S&P 500, which is a measure of the large-capitalization stocks of 500 major corporations selected by Standard & Poors, a division of The McGraw Hill Company, Inc., for their market size, liquidity and industry group representation. The Index is developed by Standard & Poor's in collaboration with Rydex Investments. The Index utilizes quarterly rebalancing to maintain its equal-weight stance.

The Fund uses a passive management strategy to track the performance of the Index. The Fund invests in substantially all of the securities in the Index in approximately the same proportions as in the Index. The Fund's investment advisor is Rydex Investments.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Guggenheim S&P 500 Equal-Weight (NYSEMKT: RSP  )
Equal-weight ETFs own the same stocks as regular S&P 500-tracking funds, but with a catch: rather than weighting the amount it invests in each stock by market capitalization, the Guggenheim ETF has roughly equal dollar amounts invested in all 500 of its holdings. Lately, that has produced better returns than the overall S&P, because of weak performance from the S&P's largest companies. With an expense ratio of 0.40%, the Guggenheim offering isn't the cheapest ETF available, but if you like simplicity and think that smaller companies are poised to outperform their larger counterparts, then the equal-weight ETF may be the right pick for you.

  • [By John Waggoner]

A fund that's weighted by market cap tends to do best in a concentrated market that is, when one stock or group of stocks excels. The Guggenheim Investments S&P 500 Equal Weighted ETF (ticker: RSP) has gained 24.3% this year, outpacing the cap-weighted ! S&P 500. The main reason could well be Apple, which has lost 6.8% this year, including reinvested dividends.

Top 10 US Companies To Buy For 2014

The capacity drive industry is a duopoly with Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate Technology (STX) leading the way. Both organizations were on an equivalent balance a year ago with a 43% offer of the hard-plate drive, or HDD market. In any case, Western Digital has hurried ahead with a 45% offer, while Seagate lingers behind with 40% of the business sector. Also focused around a couple of basic presumptions, I think this hole could enlarge further.

Contrast in execution

The PC business is decaying, so both Western Digital and Seagate are relied upon to see shortcoming in their businesses. In the past, both organizations were reporting marvelous development in their financials as the surges in Thailand limited supply. Be that as it may now, both capacity organizations reported a decrease in profit and income in their separate quarters.

Then again, it appears Western Digital is the particular case that's improving in a frail nature's domain. The company gets its revenues from two types of fees: management fees which are linked to the assets under management (AUM) and performance fees which can be quite volatile. Over the last five years AUM have increased by around 4% per annum from the low at the end of 2008. However, revenues have decreased by around 7% per annum. Performance fees have held up okay since 2008, but management fees have taken a big hit. Since revenues are dependent on the average AUM over the whole year, let look at revenues from 2009 they have grown by around 6.5% per annum in this case. Institutional clients are more sticky and stable compared to retail, but the company has not managed to increase AUM from this source substantially over the last five years.
