Hot Retail Companies For 2014

Steinway Musical Instruments (NYSE: LVB  ) has ceased to be the owner of its iconic Steinway Hall in New York City. The company formally closed a deal to sell the building to a partnership headed by real estate concern JDS Development Group. Steinway received $46.3 million in the acquisition, and will recognize a taxable gain of roughly $22 million.

Steinway Hall is a 16-story edifice housing 247,000 square feet of office and retail space, located on prime Manhattan real estate in the borough's midtown area. It's the longtime home of the company's flagship retail outlet.

The firm doesn't seem to be mourning its loss. It has the right to occupy the building through September 2014 and, subject to agreement on the rent, extend that term for another four months. Besides, in the press release announcing the news, Steinway quoted its CEO Michael Sweeney as saying that the deal "positions us to prepare for the creation of a 21st century Steinway Hall in Manhattan that serves the needs of today's artists and customers just as the West 57th Street building did when it opened in 1925."

If we look at those stocks trading with single-digit P/E ratios right now, it becomes a very simple task to separate the wheat from the chaff. There are many well-known stocks trading at low P/E ratios that get horrible grades from our system and should be avoided:

Ryland Homes (RYL) is a name you might hear discussed as a bargain, but the stock to a Sell back in November to a and is best avoided. Standard Pacific (SPF) is another builder you should probably avoid as In spite of the low P/E ratio ,you probably want to avoid discount retailer Big Lots (BIG), as a Strong Sell this week.

But fear not — there are some great companies with solid fundamentals that earn a Buy ranking from Portfolio Grader and are better candidates for a low-P/E portfolio.

Of course, the fact that Costco shares trade at such a premium to those of similar retailers has always been a factor that investors have grappled with and often disagreed on. Costco currently trades at 22 times forward earnings. That's a far cry from Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) and Target (NYSE: TGT  ) , both of which trade at 13 times forward earnings. Big Lots (NYSE: BIG  ) trades even cheaper, at 10 times forward earnings.
