Hot Freight Companies To Buy Right Now

So far this year, Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) says it has booked 1,229 "gross" orders for various configurations of its 737, 747, 777, and 787 airliners from a host of customers. Minus 161 orders canceled by customers, this leaves Boeing with 1,054 "net" orders for the year. But what about its archrival, Airbus (NASDAQOTH: EADSY  ) ?

In its latest update on "orders and deliveries" accomplished in November 2013, Airbus revealed its numbers as well. Airbus doesn't report its results in precisely the same way Boeing does, but here are the numbers as we know them.

Deliveries
Airbus delivered 58 planes to its customers in November, growing the delivery tally to 562 planes year to date, a 9% improvement over where the plane builder was this time last year.

Orders
Airbus recorded orders for 108 jetliners in the month of November. They broke down as follows:

one ACJ320 corporate jet one A319ceo (equipped with the current generation of engines) 10 A320ceos 10 A320neos (equipped with next-gen engines) four A321ceos 26 A321neos five A330-200F freighters 40 A350-900s 10 A350-1000s and finally, one A330-200F freighter.

Year to date, Airbus says it has achieved more than twice its original target of 600 orders this year, booking 1,373 planes in all, and coincidentally surpassing Boeing's gross tally by precisely one gross (144 planes). Airbus also suffered fewer cancellations, 59 in total, with the result being that its net tally for the year also exceeds Boeing's: 1,314 net new orders.

Jumbo loans are back, and these mortgages -- which start at $625,000 in some affluent areas -- are being given out like candyto those with the wealth to back them up. Once considered risky because they are not backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, lenders are falling over themselves to make these loans, driven by a securitization market dominated by entities like Redwood Trust (NYSE: RWT  ) and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) . Earlier this month, Redwood offered its seventh securitization backed by jumbos, and JPMorgan just recently announcedits second offering of the year, as well.

Alan Diaz/APAmerican Airlines did better at staying on schedule last year than it did in 2012, when it accused pilots of a work slowdown. DALLAS -- A big drop in customer complaints helped U.S. airlines post their best ratings ever even though more flights were late and more bags were mishandled, according to a report released Monday by university researchers. Virgin America topped the ratings, and three regional airlines scored at the bottom. Among the four biggest airlines, Delta Air Lines (DAL) ranked best followed by Southwest (LUV), American (AAL) and United (UAL), according to researchers from Wichita State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The researchers have graded airlines since 1991 on government figures for on-time performance, mishandled bags, bumping passengers, and complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Their key findings: On-Time Performance: Airlines operated 78.4 percent of their flights on time in 2013, down from 81.8 percent in 2012. Best: Hawaiian Airlines (HA); worst: American Eagle. Only two airlines improved: American Airlines and United. Bag Handling: The rate of lost, stolen or delayed bags rose 5 percent. Best: Virgin America; worst: American Eagle. Bumping: The rate of bumping passengers from flights fell 8 percent. Best: JetBlue Airways (JBLU); worst: SkyWest (SKYW). Complaints: Consumer complaints to the government dropped 15 percent in 2013 after rising 20 percent the year before. Best: Southwest Airlines; worst: Frontier (RJET). One of the report's authors, Wichita State business professor Dean Headley, credited the drop in complaints partly to United Airlines. The company suffered several computer-network outages and grounded hundreds of flights in 2012 when it combined the United and Continental computer networks after a merger, but "got their act together" in 2013, he said. Headley said the drop in complaints might also reflect "a certain amount of resignation" that "it's neve

Pity poor MetLife (NYSE: MET  ) . Never has a life insurer shed more in an attempt to wind up with less. In MetLife's case, its sale of its retail banking unit to GE Capital (NYSE: GE  ) was an exercise in frustration, as one regulatory hurdle rose up to replace those already vanquished. At the end of last year, the sale was finally given the green light, effectively pulling MetLife out from under the banking regulators' scrutiny.

The closing of that sale did not solve another pending problem, however. New procedures enacted by Dodd-Frank have empoweredthe Financial Stability Oversight Council to label any company as a "systemically important financial institution" if council members feel that the economy could be threatened by its failure. Earlier this week, the giant insurer announced that it had entered the last stage of the regulatory process that could give MetLife the SIFI designation that it feels it so richly does not deserve.

So far, not so good
Other companies -- like GE Capital, as well as MetLife peers AIG (NYSE: AIG  ) and Prudential (NYSE: PRU  ) -- have already earned that tag, which could push stricter new capital rules upon them. Though AIG and GE Capital are not challenging the classification, Prudential is appealingits recent designation.

Crude Steel (Billets, Blooms and Slabs)

Crude steel products include billets, blooms and slabs. Billets are bars from square sections of long steel that serve as inputs for the production of wire rod, rebars and merchant bars. They are the main product of the Acominas mill. Blooms are used to manufacture products, such as springs, forged parts, heavy structural shapes and seamless tubes. Slabs are used in the steel industry for the rolling of a range of flat rolled products. Slabs are mainly used to produce hot and cold rolled coils, heavy slabs and profiles. Crude steel products are produced using either the continuous casting or conventional process.

Common Long Rolled Products

Common long rolled products represent a major portion of the Company production. The Company main long rolled products include rebars, merchant bars and profiles, which are used mainly by the construction and manufacturing industries.

Drawn Products

Drawn products include barbed and barbless fence wire, galvanized wire, fences, concrete reinforcing wire mesh, nails and clamps. These products are not exported and are sold to the manufacturing, construction and agricultural industries.

It is a joint venture with the Kalyani Group in India, in which Gerdau has a 73.2% interest in the joint venture.

Gerdau Ameristeel also supplies flat steel to its customers through its joint venture Gallatin located in Kentucky. The Company competes with Commercial Metals Company, Nucor Corporation, Steel Dynamics Inc., ArcelorMittal Inc., ArcelorMittal Brasil, Usiminas Group and CSN.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jeff Reeves]

Gerdau (GGB) is one of the best ways to play this trend if you believe in a commodities shift. The Brazilian steel company trades for a forward P/E of about 5, and a price/sales of just a bit more than 0.7. That an incredible valuation.

  • [By Victor Selva] -largest producer in the sector.

    Why Not No. 1?

Brazil-based Gerdau has three main advantages. Size though it a strong pro is not necessarily one of them. To start with, Gerdau is a highly integrated company, with annual iron ore production capacity totaling 11.5 million metric tons, enabling it to be over 80% and 40% self-sufficient in Brazil and the U.S., respectively, and thus hedging itself from volatility in raw material prices.

Second, the company has a relatively modern fleet of furnaces, mainly composed of electric arc furnaces (EAFs), which are more energy-efficient than traditional blast furnaces and should result on a more flexible supply.

Last, the location is also a positive factor: with a high geographical diversification, Gerdau has still managed to maintain a strong leadership in the markets where it operates (particularly in Brazil and the U.S.). This allows it, on the one hand, to supply many different markets and therefore reduce risks of local economic underperformances and, on the other hand, to profit from low-cost labor in Brazil. In addition, the upcoming sporting events 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics are expected to generate a strong inflow of investments in infrastructure in the country, with Gerdau as a potential beneficiary of this.

In spite of being the biggest worldwide, I believe that ArcelorMittal doesn count with these characteristics. Further, as players in the industry are so atomized, being the No. 1 producer implies having only 6% of the global market share, which doesn give ArcelorMittal a superior bargain power than its peers. And though it still a very diversified and vertically integrated group, its costs will tend to be higher than those of Gerdau, since its furnaces are primarily blast furnaces and its labor expenses are higher as the company is based in Europe.

US Steel will also have to deal with an old and inefficient fleet of furnaces, w

Top 5 Airline Companies To Watch For 2014

At one time, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) and its upstart peers wouldn't fly long-haul routes because it was either too difficult or unprofitable to do so. But now Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) is building the extended range 737 MAX while Airbus has the A320neo. Think of them as smaller-scale versions of the 787, says Motley Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video.

The extended range of both aircraft, which are expected to enter service between 2015 and 2017, makes it more likely that smaller carriers will compete for longer-haul routes such as Los Angeles to Honolulu or New York to London. And while that's no doubt good news for Boeing stock, it's bad news for legacy carriers, Tim says.

Who wins? We won't know for years, but Southwest is already the leading buyer of the MAX, and as such, seems to be a likely benefactor. There's also Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK  ) , which already flies from the continental west coast to various destinations in the Hawaiian Islands. The airline has ordered 37 of the planes to upgrade its fleet.

Lynne Sladky/AP WASHINGTON -- U.S. airlines scored their second best performance last year in the more than two decades that researchers have been measuring airline quality, with Virgin America the leader, says an annual report released Monday. The report ranked the 14 largest U.S. airlines based on on-time arrivals, mishandled bags, consumer complaints and passengers who were bought tickets but were turned away because flights were over booked. Airline performance in 2012 was the second highest in the 23 years that Wichita State University at Omaha in Nebraska and Purdue University in Indiana have tracked the performance of airlines. The airline's best year was 2011. Virgin America, headquartered in Burlingame, Calif., did the best job on baggage handling and had the second-lowest rate of passengers denied seats due to overbookings. United Airlines (UAL), whose consumer complaint rate nearly doubled last year, had the worst performance. United has merged with Continental Airlines, but has had rough spots in integrating the operations of the two carriers. The number of complaints consumers filed with the Department of Transportation overall surged by one-fifth last year to 11,445 complaints, up from 9,414 in 2011. "Over the 20 some year history we've looked at it, this is still the best time of airline performance we've ever seen," said Dean Headley, a business professor at Wichita State University in Kansas, who has co-written the annual report. The best year was 2011, which was only slightly better than last year, he said. Despite those improvements, it isn't surprising that passengers are getting grumpier, Headley said. Carriers keep shrinking the size of seats in order to stuff more people into planes. Empty middle seats that might provide a little more room have vanished. And more people who have bought tickets are being turned away because flights are overbooked. "The way airlines have taken 130-seat airplanes and expanded them to 150 seats to sque

5 Earnings Short-Squeeze Plays

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Short-sellers hate being caught short a stock that reports a blowout quarter. When this happens, we often see a tradable short squeeze develop as the bears rush to cover their positions to avoid big losses. Even the best short-sellers know that it's never a great idea to stay short once a bullish earnings report sparks a big short-covering rally.

Must Read: 12 Stocks Warren Buffett Loves in 2014

This is why I scan the market for heavily shorted stocks that are about to report earnings. You only need to find a few of these stocks in a year to help enhance your portfolio returns -- the gains become so outsized in such a short time frame that your profits add up quickly.

That said, let's not forget that stocks are heavily shorted for a reason, so you have to use trading discipline and sound money management when playing earnings short-squeeze candidates. It's important that you don't go betting the farm on these plays and that you manage your risk accordingly. Sometimes the best play is to wait for the stock to break out following the report before you jump in to profit off a short squeeze. This way, you're letting the trend emerge after the market has digested all of the news.

Of course, sometimes the stock is going to be in such high demand that you risk missing a lot of the move by waiting. That's why it can be worth betting prior to the report -- but only if the stock is acting technically very bullish and you have a very strong conviction that it is going to rip higher. Just remember that even when you have that conviction and have done your due diligence, the stock can still get hammered if Wall Street doesn't like the numbers or guidance.

If you do decide to bet ahead of a quarter, then you might want to use options to limit your capital exposure. Heavily shorted stocks are usually the names that make the biggest post-earnings moves and have the most volatility. I personally prefer to wait until all the earnings-related news is out for a heavily shorted stock and then jump in and trade the prevailing trend.

With that in mind, here's a look at several stocks that could experience big short squeezes when they report earnings this week.

Weibo

My first earnings short-squeeze play is China-based social media platform player Weibo (WB), which is set to release numbers on Thursday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Weibo to report revenue of $81.51 million on a loss of 1 cent per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Weibo is extremely 46.7%. That means that out of the 9.40 million shares in the tradable float, 4.39 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a monster short interest on a stock with a very low tradable float. Any bullish earnings news could easily set off a huge short-squeeze for shares of WB post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, WB is currently trending above its 50-day moving average, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending over the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $16.72 to its recent high of $19.95 a share. During that uptrend, shares of WB have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of WB within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on WB, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.95 to just over $20 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.23 million shares. If that breakout hits post-earnings, then WB will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $24 to its 52-week high at $26.08 a share. Any high-volume move above $26.08 will then give WB a chance to tag or take out $30 a share.

I would simply avoid WB or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below some key near-term support levels at $18.51 to $17.63 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then WB will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week low of $16.26 a share.

Kohl's

Another potential earnings short-squeeze play is department store player Kohl's (DDS), which is set to release its numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Kohl's to report revenue of $4.41 billion on earnings of 74 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Kohl's is pretty high at 12.6%. That means that out of the 202.66 million shares in the tradable float, 25.70 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of KSS could easily rip sharply higher post-earnings as the bears jump to cover some of their trades.

From a technical perspective, KSS is currently trending just below its 50-day moving average and above its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been uptrending a bit over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $53.86 to its recent high of $57.70 a share. That move has now pushed shares of KSS within range of triggering a big breakout trade post-earnings above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

If you're in the bull camp on KSS, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $57.70 to its 50-day moving average of $58.58 a share and then above more resistance at $59.62 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 3.09 million shares. If that breakout kicks off post-earnings, then KSS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $61.90 to its 52-week high at $63.54 a share. Any high-volume move above its 52-week high will then give KSS a chance to tag or take out $70 a share.

I would simply avoid KSS or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below some key near-term support levels at its 200-day moving average of $54.81 a share to more support at $53.86 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then KSS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at $50.57 a share to its 52-week low of $48.68 a share.

Revance Therapeutics

Another potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is biopharmaceutical player Revance Therapeutics (RVNC), which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Revance Therapeutics to report revenue of $100,000 on a loss of 69 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Revance Therapeutics is notable at 6.7%. That means that out of the 15.53 million shares in the tradable float, 1.04 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of RVNC could easily surge sharply higher post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their bets. Keep in mind that this company has a very low float, so a solid quarter could easily produce a big short-squeeze.

From a technical perspective, RVNC is currently trending above its 50-day moving average, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending over the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $14.62 to its recent high of $20.96 a share. During that uptrend, shares of RVNC have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RVNC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above some key overhead resistance levels.

If you're bullish on RVNC, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $20.96 to $21.25 a share and then above more resistance at $22.05 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 168,002 shares. If that breakout materializes post-earnings, then RVNC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $24.30 to $25.88 a share, or even $30 to $33 a share.

I would avoid RVNC or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below its 50-day moving average of $19.31 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then RVNC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at $17.94 to $17.02 a share, or even $16 to its 52-week low of $14.62 a share.

Sally Beauty

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is professional beauty supplies specialty retailer Sally Beauty (SBH), which is set to release numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Sally Beauty to report revenue of $945.38 million on earnings of 40 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Sally Beauty is notable at 4.6%. That means that out of 146.18 million shares in the tradable float, 6.77 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 1.3%, or by 91,000 shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a strong quarter, then shares of SBH could easily rip higher post-earnings as the bears scramble to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, SBH is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last four months, with shares moving higher from its low of $24.09 to its recent high of $29.73 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SBH have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SBH within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above some key overhead resistance levels.

If you're bullish on SBH, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $29.53 to $29.73 a and then above its 52-week high at $31.86 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 939,032 shares. If that breakout develops post-earnings, then SBH will set up to trend towards $35 to $40 a share.

I would simply avoid SBH or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below some key near-term support levels at $28.37 to its 50-day moving average of $28.25 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then SBH will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at its 200-day moving average of $26.99 to $26.80 a share. Any high-volume move below those levels will then give SBH a chance to tag $25 to $24 a share.

Applied Materials

My final earnings short-squeeze trade idea is semiconductor player Applied Materials (AMAT), which is set to release numbers on Thursday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Applied Materials to report revenue of $2.27 billion on earnings of 27 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Applied Materials is notable at 6%. That means that out of the 1.21 billion shares in the tradable float, 73.42 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a big short interest on a stock with a very low tradable float. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 1.6%, or by 1.14 million shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of AMAT could easily jump sharply higher post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their trades.

From a technical perspective, AMAT is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $18.63 to its high of $22.96 a share. During that uptrend, shares of AMAT have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of AMAT within range of triggering a big breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're in the bull camp on AMAT, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $22.96 to $23.16 a share and then above its 52-week high at $23.46 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 13.31 million shares. If that breakout develops post-earnings, then AMAT will set up to trend towards $30 to $35 a share.

I would avoid AMAT or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops back below some key near-term support levels at its 50-day of $21.49 a share to its 200-day at $20.61 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then AMAT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at $18.63 to $18.31 a share, or even its 52-week low of $16.40 a share.

Top 10 Gas Companies To Buy For 2014

A very fundamental aspect of equity investing is understanding the companies and sectors in which you invest. In the equity universe, there are a number of sectors, and equity investors require some specialized knowledge to make educated investment decisions. The oil and gas sector is teeming with complicated terminology that can overwhelm investors new to the space. With a basic understanding of this terminology and the oil and gas business in general, investors can better understand the fundamentals of oil and gas stocks.

Hydrocarbon Basics
Crude oil and natural gas are naturally occurring substances present in rock amidst the earth's crust. The origin of oil and gas is organic material - the remains of plants and animals - compressed in sedimentary rock such as sandstone, limestone and shale. Sedimentary rock is a product of sediment deposits in ancient oceans and other bodies of water. As layers of sediment were deposited on the ocean floor, decaying remains of plants and animals were integrated into the forming rock. This organic material eventually transformed into oil and gas after being exposed to a specific temperature and pressure range deep within the earth's crust.

Apart from the momentum traders, the growth seekers have to check it out too. Manitok Energy is another growth company with a non-existent coverage from the online publications, although it has been growing by leaps and bounds during the last couple of years. I really enjoy uncovering such companies. In fact, by discovering under-followed growth companies with very attractive valuations is how I started my articles with SeekingAlpha one year ago. It was when I uncovered C&C Energia. I recommended this debt-free South American producer at ~$5.7 in August 2012. C&C Energia was bought out by Pacific Rubiales (PEGFF.PK) a couple of months later at $9.81. My article is here.
