Coach's Loss Could Be Coach's Gain

Next year, Coach (NYSE: COH  ) is going to be operating without one of its longtime designers, Reed Krakoff. The creative director is leaving after his current contract expires in 2014 to focus on his self-titled brand. Krakoff has been with Coach for 16 years, and his designs have helped move the company from one of the many to one of the few.

Krakoff started his own line in 2010, and the label's success has been phenomenal. That's put a strain on his time, and led to his decision to leave Coach, according to The New York Times. The change might be a blessing in disguise, as Coach is well set to move forward into a new era of design, and could benefit from some new blood at the top.

16 years of success
I don't want to come across as thinking it's time for Krakoff to go; it's just that he's been there a long time -- even the best presidents have term limits. Over the last 16 years, Krakoff has been the architect of Coach's design revival. While the brand has been around since the 1940s, Coach went through a weak phase in the 1990s. Krakoff took the lackluster brand and turned it into a style icon.

During the last 10 years, his vision and the leadership of CEO Lew Frankfort -- who is also stepping down next year  -- have given investors a healthy return. But the emergence of new brands, notably Michael Kors (NYSE: KORS  ) , has upped the stakes at Coach. A fresh batch of leaders and designers could help the company keep its place in the limelight.

The new normal
In its earnings release this week, Coach once again gave investors a glimpse of the two things it's consistently done right, and the one thing that it continues to struggle with. On the plus side, Coach has made its international business and its men's line absolute stars. Sales in China increased 40% last quarter, with double-digit comparable sales growth. Meanwhile, the men's line is on track to grow by 50% from last year, up to $600 million in revenue.

But Coach is hampered by its North American comparable-store sales growth. Last quarter, it came in at an anemic 1%. Meanwhile, Kors is storming the fashion scene with a 41% growth in comparable sales. Even though the current deck seems stacked in Kors' favor, this coming fall may be Coach's first chance to start fresh.

Kors has received mixed reviews of its fall line, and Coach is going to launch its first clothing line in October. The company -- in a bid to have the highest management turnover rate in the industry -- brought in design director Sandra Hill to help it compete on a broader stage.

If Coach can get its first clothing line right, then it could be on the road to a great few years with new leadership and a strong back catalog of customer favorites. While Kors is sitting pretty atop the heap right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see fortunes change by the end of 2013. Regardless, it'll be interesting to watch.

More on Kors
Michael Kors is one of today's hottest high-end fashion brands, and that's translated into one of the best-performing stocks in retail -- since its debut on the market in late 2011, the share price has more than doubled. But with all that growth, has the stock finally become too expensive, or is there still room left to run? The Motley Fool's premium report on Michael Kors gives investors all the information they need to make the right decision. Top 10 Prefered Stocks For 2014

Facebook's (NASDAQ: FB  ) ultimate goal is to connect and understand the world. On its way there, it has some intermediate and long-term goals that will contribute to theoverall aspiration. In the company's most recent conference call with analysts, CEO Mark Zuckerberg talked about the company's ambitions in three-year, five-year, and 10-year goals.

This information can help investors understand Facebook's strategies and investments over the next few years. They can then determine if the $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp, for example, actually helps Facebook achieve its goal.

Here's where Facebook sees itself in the next three, five, and 10 years, according to comments Zuckerberg made in the Oct. 28 conference call.

Three years

Over the next three years, our main goals are around continuing to grow and serve our existing communities and businesses and help them reach their full potential.

When Zuckerberg talks about "existing communities" he's talking about Facebook products that have close to 1 billion users because, as he noted later in Facebook'searnings call, things don't get interesting "until they have about a billion people using them." So, Facebook is looking to grow and serve its main social networking product, along with components such as Groups, Pages, and News Feed.

The Company multifamily guaranty book of business consists of multifamily mortgage loans underlying Fannie Mae MBS and multifamily loans and securities held in Fannie Mae mortgage portfolio. Revenues for Fannie Mae Multifamily business are derived from a variety of sources, including guaranty fees received as compensation for assuming the credit risk on the mortgage loans underlying multifamily Fannie Mae MBS and on the multifamily mortgage loans held in its portfolio and on other mortgage-related securities; transaction fees associated with the multifamily business, and other bond credit enhancement related fees. As with the servicing of single-family mortgages, multifamily mortgage servicing is performed by the lenders who! sell the! mortgages to the Company. Activities Fannie Mae is undertaking to provide liquidity to the mortgage market include whole loan conduit, early funding, real estate mortgage investment conduit (REMICs) and other structured securitizations and dollar roll transactions. Whole loan conduit activities include its purchase of both single-family and multifamily loans principally for the purpose of securitizing them. During the year ended December 31, 2010, it was engaged in dollar roll activity. A dollar roll transaction is a commitment to purchase a mortgage-related security with a concurrent agreement to re-sell a similar security at a later date or vice versa.

Fannie Mae Capital Markets group is engaged in issuing both single-class and multi-class Fannie Mae MBS through both portfolio securitizations and structured securitizations involving third party assets. Its Capital Markets group creates single-class and multi-class Fannie Mae MBS from mortgage-related assets held in its mortgage portfolio. Fannie Mae Capital Markets group may sell these Fannie Mae MBS into the secondary market or may retain the Fannie Mae MBS in its investment portfolio. The Company Capital Markets group creates single-clas! s and mul! ti-class structured Fannie Mae MBS, for its lender customers or securities dealer customers, in exchange for a transaction fee. The Company Capital Markets group provides its lender customers and their affiliates with services that include offering to purchase a range of mortgage assets, including non-standard mortgage loan products; segregating customer portfolios to obtain optimal pricing for their mortgage loans, and assisting customers with hedging their mortgage business.

Although the Company Capital Markets group business activities are focused on short-term financing and investing, revenue from its Capital Markets group is derived primarily from the difference, or spread, between the interests it earns on its mortgage and non-mortgage investments and the interest it incurs on the debt the Company issues to fund these assets. Its Capital Markets revenues are primarily derived from the Company mortgage asset portfolio. Capital Markets group funds its investments primarily through the issuance of a variety of debt securities in a range of maturities in the domestic and international capital markets. Two positions not listed on the most recent filing include Herbalife (HLF) put options and total return swaps in Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FMCC). In summary, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have to pay its profits to the government due to the previous inability of the companies to pay the full dividends on its preferred shares sold to the government during the bailout. Fannie and Freddie can now more than afford to pay the dividend, but the government is still taking all of the profits. Ackman and other large investors are battling the U.S. government in court over the issue. His stake in the companies comprises about 2.5 percent of the portfolio.

As Fall TV Season Begins, 4 Companies to Watch

www.cbs.com"NCIS: New Orleans" extends the franchise for CBS. The fall season has kicked off, so it's time to look at the overall television market and the four companies that have the most at stake. Racing to Cash In On the Back End The month of May wasn't that merry for many broadcasters as upfront ad sales didn't go as well as expected. Think of the upfronts as a sales conference in which networks pitch 30-second spots to buyers, who commit money up front for the right to run their ads during commercial breaks. The more popular the show, the pricier the buy. Most networks managed meager price hikes this time around, leading analysts to speculate that buyers are shifting dollars to on-demand platforms such as YouTube and Hulu. "You're definitely seeing more compelling growth in advertising spending on new media platforms, digital platforms, than you are on the traditional. I don't think, though, that it's matched dollar for dollar in the sense that I don't think all the money that's flowed away from broadcast in the upfront necessarily flowed directly into new digital platforms," Disney (DIS) chief executive Bob Iger said during the most recent earnings conference call. Twenty-First Century Fox (FOXA) President Chase Carey downplayed the digital networks in a call with analysts. He also said that Fox could see substantial upside in the "scatter" market, where unclaimed spots are sold. Highly rated shows can sometimes command a huge premium late in the season, as "Breaking Bad" did last year for AMC Networks (AMCX). Networks Making Big Bets Carey's correct about the potential upside, but for broadcasters, the environment is also about as dangerous as it's ever been. Here's a closer look at the four networks with the most on the line. 1. CBS (CBS) Is there a better positioned network than CBS? Not by my tally. "The Big Bang Theory" was TV's highest-rated scripted show last season, with 19.9 million viewers. "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" also broke into the top four. This season, CBS has five new shows. "NCIS: New Orleans" is the one to keep an eye on. Starring Scott Bakula, Lucas Black, Zoe McLellan, and C.C.H. Pounder, this version of the "NCIS" team patrols Bourbon Street and beyond. If it hits, it'll be another magnet for ad dollars, proof that CBS has a durable franchise it can continue to build upon. Segment financials: CBS' Entertainment segment includes both its signature TV network and film projects. Revenue jumped 12.4 percent last year. Operating income improved 15.4 percent. Playing home to three of television's four highest-rated shows is having an impact, which means franchise exhaustion -- if it sets in here -- could take a toll. 2. Comcast (CMCSA) After years of lagging behind, Comcast's NBC subsidiary has enjoyed a resurgence. Dark drama deserves at least some of the credit. "The Blacklist" came from nowhere on Monday nights to attract close to 15 million viewers. This season, NBC is moving the show to Thursdays and funding six new programs. The unknown among the bunch is the drama "Constantine," a DC Comics adaptation due next month that scored well on the San Diego Comic-Con buzz meter. Segment financials: Despite strong ratings from its top programs, NBCUniversal's broadcast TV operation earned $1 billion less revenue last year than the year prior. Operating income also declined slightly. If "Constantine" wins Friday-night viewers for the Peacock Network, creating another franchise, it could give a needed boost to the division's financials. 3. Disney Over at ABC, only "Dancing With the Stars" ranks among last season's 10 most-watched network programs. "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." didn't even make the top 40 but is returning for a second season. Previews tease "Agent Carter," a fill-in show that arrives during the winter break. Six other new shows are on tap, including another Shonda Rhimes legal thriller, "How to Get Away With Murder." Segment financials: Not surprisingly, ABC saw a modest revenue increase and a 15.7 percent drop in operating income. Stiff competition from network rivals has made it tough for the network to gain momentum outside of Thursday winners "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal." A new hit could produce meaningful upside for this segment of Disney's business. 4. Fox The fourth major network does well on cable with Fox News and related shows, but trails badly in terms of broadcast programming. Yet there is a silver lining: New shows with buzz, such as "Gotham" and "Gracepoint." "Gotham" drew 8.2 million viewers in its debut Monday, but sophomore series "Sleepy Hollow" followed with only 5.5 million viewers, down an average of 8.4 million viewers last year. In 2014, Fox adds five new shows, with getting the most buzz. Segment financials: After two years of mostly flat growth, Fox TV grew revenue 9 percent in fiscal 2014. Operating income grew 3 percent. Fox may not be the biggest network, but it does well cashing in on what it has. In that sense, "Gotham," "Gracepoint" and its other new shows aren't so much risks as they are potential catalysts. Now it's your turn to weigh in. Which networks are you watching most? Which shows do you think will have an impact? Leave your thoughts below. More from Tim Beyers

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

But much of this newfound oil and gas production is taking place in regions that haven been traditional producers of oil and gas. This has created strong demand for midstream providers to build the gathering systems, pipelines and storage tanks required to move oil and gas from fields in North Dakota and Pennsylvania to customers on the Gulf Coast and in the Northeast. This profited such midstream MLP giants asKinder Morgan Energy Partners(NYSE: KMP),Enterprise Products Partners(NYSE: EPD), andPlains All American Pipeline(NYSE: PAA).

The company is seeking to reject crude oil that contains more than five parts per million of the potentially deadly gas. This is after the company found extremely high concentrations of the gas in one of its crude oil tanks in North Dakota. The level of hydrogen sulfate hit 1200 parts per million which is a very potentially dangerous level.

TransCanada (NYSE: TRP  ) , the operator of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, said it will be postponing the line's in-service date from late 2014 or early 2015 to the second half of 2015, as the regulatory process drags on longer than anticipated.

  • [By Vanina Egea]

Few projects carried forward by the oil and gas industry in the US have elicited such stronger reaction from the public as Keystone XL. Criticized by environmentalists and indigenous peoples, supported by conservative politicians and representative of the states involved, the project has not been able to secure favorable legislation yet. Most important, recent tar sand spills gave the public a chance to organize and form a united front to oppose the proposed project. Currently, the project counts with Canadian blessing and waits for the same to occur on the other side of the frontier. Meanwhile, TransCanada (TRP) argues the new pipeline will be constructed with the highest safeguards in mind. The delay, however, has impacted over market performance and an ebb on stock value increases can be seen through the last year.

Top 10 Bank Stocks To Invest In 2014

The Federal Reserve will commemorate its centennial on Monday. President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act on Dec. 23, 1913, creating the Fed. The milestone comes at a pivotal moment in Fed history, with the central bank preparing to unwind the trillions of dollars in easy money it has pumped into the economy since the 2008 financial crisis. Here are five things you may not know about the Fed:

The 1920s: Roaring Twenties policy foreshadows QE

In its early years, the Fed managed the amount of money in circulation by buying and selling gold and raising or lowering the "discount rate" at which it lent to banks. But Benjamin Strong, head of the New York Fed, realized that gold was no longer the main factor controlling credit in the economy. By making a large purchase of government securities in 1923, Strong saw that he could infuse money into the banking system and push down interest rates. The Fed was transitioning from being an emergency lender to an engineer of the economy's fortunes through the availability of credit. Today, the Fed buys and sells securities to raise or lower its benchmark short-term interest rate and, since the 2008 financial crisis, has purchased bonds to lower long-term rates, a controversial strategy known as quantitative easing, or QE.

10 Best Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now

According to its 2012 earnings report, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) paid $31.045 billion in income taxes in 2012.

That sounds like a lot of money, even for Exxon. It sounds like even more money when you consider that, in a recent position paper on why the oil industry is overtaxed and can't pay any more, the American Petroleum Instituteboasted that "America's oil and natural gas industry already returns more than $86 million to the federal Treasury every day."

Over the course of 365 days, that works out to $31.4 billion annually, or just a bit more than what Exxon says that it paid in taxes, all on its lonesome. So ... does this mean that oil companies Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) and ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , refiners Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) and Sunoco, natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) -- that all these members of "America's oil and natural gas industry," combined, paid basically no income taxes, and stuck Exxon with the bill?
