Best Blue Chip Companies To Invest In 2014

Our Dividend Yield Theory looks at blue chip stocks, which have the tendency to follow a repetitive pattern of moving from historic parameters of high yield to low yield, and then back to high yield. This marks levels of historic under and overvaluation, explains Kelley Wright, editor of IQ Trends.

This theory can also be applied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU), which has also displayed a long-term, repetitive tendency to fluctuate between high and low dividend yield extremes. Indeed, looking at broad market behavior, we've seen three signs of Overvalued conditions.

1) the percentage of Undervalued stocks falls to 17% or less;

2) the percentage of Overvalued stocks is greater than the percentage of Undervalued stocks;

3) the dividend yield of the Dow Jones Industrial Average declines to within 10% of its historically repetitive area of low yield.

When the above Overvalued conditions have occurred simultaneously, there is historical precedent, or a tendency for, a broad market decline sufficient to remove these conditions as areas of concern.

With its stock price down 35% over the past six months, and concerns about a lack of innovation and growing competition, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) doesn't need the PR nightmare that its new uber campus will likely become. According to an "anonymous insider,"who spoke with Businessweek,Steve Jobs' dream of "building the best office building in the world" will become a reality -- for what's estimated to be a staggering $5 billion price tag. The money itself isn't the problem, of course; Apple has that in its petty cash drawer. But the timing of the project? That's another matter altogether.

The mighty Apple (AAPL) has greatly reaped benefits from its epic innovation Phone. Smartphones have been around us in various forms since early 2000. But, right from its introduction in 2007, till the present day Apple has made millions by revolutionizing the smartphone experience, the latest and the greatest contribution being made by the iPhone 5S.

David Tepper, president of hedge fund Appaloosa Management, is a value investor but known for exceptional market timing as well. Therefore, his drastic portfolio changes in the fourth quarter raise questions. Tepper sold out of 26 positions and reduced 9 by more than half. He also bought four new positions and added a great deal of Apple (AAPL). Institutional Investor reports that he was 30 to 40 percent cash in the third quarter, and now he has sold even more of his holdings in the fourth quarter.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Other large-cap stocks didn't do quite so well over the last year but could see their fortunes change in years to come. Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) , for example, gained 5% and yields 4.1%. With domestic tobacco companies challenged by tightening regulations, rising taxes, and a shrinking smoking base, many have assumed that Philip Morris is the best bet in tobacco. But in the third quarter, it posted the weakest results, with volume taking a sizable drop and a strong dollar reducing its earnings. Bulls like its innovation and share buybacks.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Phillip Morris (PM) gained 2.8% to $86.56 after boosting its dividend by 10.6%.

Restoration Hardware (RH) dropped 12% to $68.04 despite what many considered to be a solid earningsreport. Not Barron’s.

  • [By Ted Cooper]

Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) returned 146% in stock price increases and dividends over the last five years. That's an average of nearly 30% per year. Clearly, investors who owned Philip Morris for any significant length of time during the last five years made out pretty well. Unfortunately, two new developments have emerged to make future returns less certain. All Philip Morris investors need to know about these two things before deciding whether to hold or sell their stock.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

Some of the traditionally defensive stocks like Phillip Morris International (PM) and Merck (MRK) also fail our test for operating conditions and financial changes. Yield chasers have also pushed the value of their shares to unsustainable levels, and are unlikely to see much more than mid- to low-single-digit profit growth for several years.

The Dow’s comeback–if erasing a 0.4% drop can be called a comeback–was especially impressive considering that the four highest-priced stocks, and the ones with the biggest weights in the index, finished in the red. Visa (V) fell 0.6% to $220.55–perhaps a side-effect of this American Express (AXP) upgrade?–while Goldman Sachs (GS) fell 0.6% to $161 after naming a third co-head to its securities division, and 3M (MMM) declined 0.5% at $129.70. International Business Machines (IBM) dipped 0.1% to $177.14.

Peter Foley/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesBurberry Group CEO Angela Ahrendts. LONDON -- Christopher Bailey, the designer credited with restoring the cachet to fashion brand Burberry, is to become chief executive next year when long-standing boss Angela Ahrendts will move to Apple. The 157-year-old British fashion house, famous for its camel, red and black check pattern, said Tuesday that Ahrendts would step down by mid-2014 after which Bailey would combine his role as chief creative officer with chief executive. News the 42-year-old Yorkshireman would hold both positions sparked concern among some analysts that he might be taking on too much, and sent shares in the group down 6 percent in early trading, valuing the business at 6.6 billion pounds. "There will undoubtedly be relief that Mr. Bailey, the driving force behind the brand for the last 12 years, is staying," Morgan Stanley (MS) said in a note to clients. "But we anticipate some investor concern about combining the chief creative officer and CEO roles, which are both time consuming and require very dif! ferent skill sets." Ahrendts, who has been Burberry (BURBY) boss for eight years, during which time its share price has soared about 250 percent, will take up a newly created position at Apple as a senior vice president with oversight of retail and online stores. She will report directly to CEO Tim Cook. Ahrendts will be looking to do better than the last chief executive of a British company who left London to join Apple (AAPL) -- John Browett who quit Dixons to lead the iPad and iPhone maker's global retail expansion in 2012. He left six months later. Bailey joined Burberry in 2001 and has held the major creative role for six years, helping to rebuild the group after it became a victim of its own success in the 1990s when its trademark pattern was embraced by the mass market, losing its appeal to its core wealthy clientele. Under Ahrendts and Bailey, the group has refocused on the luxury market, inc

When considering the state of the industrial metals market as a whole, Nelson notes that the current global copper supply is much tighter than it was just a few months ago. Furthermore, Nelson also cites the company’s lackluster performance in 2013 as another reason for why it may be able to deliver more impressive returns in the future; Southern Copper is down 25% year-to-date, compared to its closest competitor Freeport McMoran (FCX), which is up 10% on the year. As such, BB&T upgraded the company from “Hold” to “Buy” with a price target of $24 a share.

Last year Hess (NYSE: HES  ) and Whiting (NYSE: WLL  ) represented 33% and 25%, respectively, of Bakken-based Power Fuel's revenue before it merged with Nuverra. Both companies represent big future opportunities, as Hess expects to drill 175 wells this year and has plans to double its daily production by 2015, while Whiting sees the potential for more than 4,000 future wells on its Northern Rockies acreage. If Nuverra can continue to work with both companies to capture thatgrowth and up-sellvalue-added services like solid waste, then it speaks to a bright future for the company.

Top 10 Financial Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) is already up 1.03%, following a sizable gain yesterday, and following four previous days of crashing and burning. Why the sudden change of pace?

Big-bank roundup
First, here's a quick look at what Citi's peers are doing so far today:

Lessons learned the hard way
With yesterday's dramatic turnaround in Citi's fortunes, you might think there was some breaking news. Perhaps a favorable settlement over an investor lawsuit had been reached. Or the superbank had announced an acquisition that was going to significantly boost its revenue or net income.

No. Nothing like that has happened. What happened is, the market got a grip on itself. Last Wednesday, B of A reported first-quarter earnings, missed Wall Street expectations by a hair, and investors panicked. Financials tanked, and it's taken four or five days for things to return to normal.

Whereas in the 1970s there were limited ways to hedge against inflation, now there is a cornucopia of currency and international commodities instruments that can not only hedge against inflation but other global shocks, such as market bubbles and even war.

And it is these very scenarios that investors have been worried about. Since the beginning of the year, stocks, bonds and just about any investment you can think of have gyrated wildly at various times amid concerns of war, inflation and the possibility that the U.S. equity market is overvalued and headed for a correction.

In response, some market analysts in Bloomberg news reports have offered any number of wildly unsubstantiated statements for why investors should ignore today’s perils. They dismiss the danger posed by Russia annexation of Ukraine Crimea region (utin will stop short of other countries or war with the West. They also argue that the Federal Reserve chairwoman misspoke (anet Yellen really didn mean a rate hike is coming soon. Inflation is under control. It was a rookie mistake.

Umpqua (UMPQ) is engaged in the business of commercial and retail banking and the delivery of retail brokerage services. This stock closed up 5% at $17.11 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 2.16 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 686,781

    Volume % Change: 235%

From a technical perspective, UMPQ ripped sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $16.51 with strong upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of UMPQ within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if UMPQ manages to take out Monday's intraday high of $17.46 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $17.48 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UMPQ as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $16.51 or above more near-term support at $16 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 686,781 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then UMPQ will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $20 to $23.

Best Oil Service Stocks To Own For 2014

Offshore drillers like Transocean (RIG), Seadrill (SDRL) and Noble (NE) have gotten pounded this year. Is it time to buy? Well, if not that, at least its time to become less bearish, say the folks at BMO Capital Markets, who upgraded the shares of Transocean, Seadrill, Diamond Offshore (DO), Ensco (ESV), Noble, Rowan (RDC) and Atwood Oceanics (ATW).

Bloomberg

BMO Capital Markets’ Alan Laws and Peyton Mason explain why they see better times ahead of offshore-drilling stocks:

We are upgrading the offshore drillers to Market Perform from Underperform given what we view as a better risk/reward balance over next 6 to 12 months. We believe the stocks largely discount the weakness seen/expected in the industry in 2014/2015 with consensus estimates now reflecting the anticipated level of day rate reductions. Recent fixtures, while likely negotiated in 2013, suggest activity is resuming (albeit slowly), and we expect this to increase as learing houserates are reached for producer cost containment. In other words, the potential for a surprise demand uptick now outweighs already price- in risks of further weakening, in our view. In our view, the largest risk to our upgrade today is being a bit early given what could be a longer drawn-out return to activity. That said we want to be positioned for the technical inflection like the land rigs in fall 2012. Stock downside appears limited with an already negative bias in expectations and ultimately investor fatigue with the thesis. Fundamental valuation metrics (PE and P/BV) also suggest trough levels. We think differentiation (vs. being viewed as one group) is likely to become more pronounced in a bounce, and we prefer ATW and ESV over peers. While other subsectors in Oil Services remain more attractive today, we believe value and contrarian investors should start kicking tires.

Answer: I would stick with NextEra, but wait for a pullback to the 94 range. The first quarter was a good one, with expectations-beating top- and bottom-line numbers, not to mention the 9.8 percent dividend increase.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Fluidigm (Nasdaq: FLDM  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Fluidigm doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 24.0%, and inventory increased 14.4%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue expanded 32.8%, and inventory increased 14.4%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks worrisome. Revenue dropped 7.2%, and inventory grew 2.8%.

This stock closed up 9.8% at $19.55 in Friday's trading session.

    Friday's Volume: 430,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 96,902

    Volume % Change: 375%

From a technical perspective, FLDM gapped up sharply here and broke out above some near-term overhead resistance at $18.54 with heavy upside volume. This move also pushed shares of FLDM into new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out $19.96 before closing at $19.55. Shares of FLDM are now trending within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if FLDM manages to take out Friday's high of $20.04 and then once it clears its all-time high of $20.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FLDM as long as it's trending above Friday's low of $18.52 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 96,902 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then FLDM will set up to enter new 52-week- and all-time-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $25 to $30.
