Best Healthcare Technology Stocks To Invest In 2014

There were 55 tax breaks that expired when the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve that will affect millions of American businesses and individuals.

The practice of letting numerous tax breaks expire during Congress's December vacation has become a yearly tradition. In 2012, 36 tax provisions expired on the last day of the year. In 2011, there were 58.

While Congress has allowed the tax provisions to expire, they have also made a point to eventually renew them retroactively. That has allowed tax payers to claim the breaks on their tax returns. In this case, because the provisions were in effect throughout 2013, they will not affect tax returns until 2015.

But relying on Congress to retroactively renew tax breaks just because they have in the past is an unsettling proposition for tax payers. Congress didn't renew the provisions that expired in 2011 until New Year's Day 2013. What if they wait even longer this time?

"It's a totally ridiculous way to run our tax system," Rachelle Bernstein, vice president and tax counsel for the National Retail Federation, told the Associated Press. "It's impossible to plan when every year this happens, but yet business has gotten used to that."

    Monday's Volume: 218,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 143,188

    Volume % Change: 75%

From a technical perspective, IVC jumped higher here right above some near-term support at $16 with above-average volume. This move briefly pushed shares of IVC into breakout territory, since the stock flirted with some past resistance at $16.81. This move is also close to pushing shares of IVC above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading price action, that has seen IVC trade between $14.92 on the downside and $16.81 on the upside.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IVC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $15.75 and then once it sustains a move or close above Monday's high of $16.84 with volume that's near or above 143,188 shares. If we get that move soon, then IVC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $18.24 to $19.15.

Advisors' Opinion:

Coal will still be a top energy source
It's easy to be down on coal. Ever since shale gas started flowing in the U.S., many have speculated that it would replace coal because it was a moreemissions-friendly fuel source and it was less expensive. While that may look to be the case (and several trends in the U.S. back it up), the truth is that coal will remain a dominant force in the energy game. To take it even further, the EIA estimates that coal will surpass oil as the premier energy source by 2017. This is in large part because of two factors: natural gas requires a robustinfrastructure to transport, aninfrastructuremany developing nations do not have, and several countries have natural gas prices indexed to oil, so its price is kept artificially high. This is mostly how American coal companyAlliance Natural Resources (NASDAQ: ARLP  ) was able topost a record 2012 in both sales and production.
